Innovation and value build over existing knowledge and tools and, today, they always require software systems in order to deliver.

Most of investments made by companies in software are focused to non-core processes, that is processes required to run the company or required by law, such as payrolls and invoicing, but not making a difference versus competition.

Innovation is a core process requiring a collaborative model: business users need different software products to support collaborative product development processes in a global environment to create innovative products and services. New organization models are required by network of enterprises, to deliver true market differentiators versus competition.

There is also a new way to build and distribute software. It is interesting the paradox about proprietary software vendors which spend between 50-70% of revenues convincing customers to buy their product (sales and marketing) and less than 10% of revenues actually making better products (engineering).

As other open source companies, we thought there is a new way: write the core components of our products publicly and distribute them through an open source license. Individuals and companies would be free to evaluate the product and engage with us when they were ready for a commercial relationship. This model requires putting the product in front of your sales force, which means having a fast, intuitive application that is easy to learn, use and extend. Even for components we distribute under the Nauba Commercial License, we always include full source code for our customers to inspect and modify it to suit their needs.

Having full access to the Nauba products' source code avoids the typical vendor lock-in issue with traditional commercial licenses.
